Dr. Kandregula Ganapathi Rao is a resilient, positive, and smart-working professional known for maintaining composure under pressure while driving teams toward timely and effective execution. He approaches challenges with persistence and optimism, motivating peers through action rather than words. His collaborative mindset and ability to handle high-pressure situations with a smile have made him a trusted team player and leader. During his time at IIT Madras, he was fondly known as “Kattappa” at the Gymkhana—reflecting his discipline, dedication, and commitment.
Born in Avidi, a village in the fertile Godavari delta region of Andhra Pradesh, India, Dr. Ganapathi Rao’s academic journey reflects a strong foundation in engineering blended with deep scientific curiosity. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and Master’s degree in Nanotechnology from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH).
He began his professional career as a Research Associate at Shore Infotech India Pvt. Ltd., secured through campus placement, where he gained two years of industry experience. Driven by a passion for research and innovation, he transitioned back to academia and worked as a Project Assistant at CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, further strengthening his expertise in materials and electrochemical research.
Dr. Ganapathi Rao completed his Ph.D. in Energy Conversion and Storage (Electrochemistry) at the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) under the supervision of Prof. Kothandaraman Ramanujam. His doctoral research focused on advanced electrochemical systems, including energy storage technologies, photo-supercapatteries, and the integration of ML/AI tools in the energy sector.
He was honored with the Prof. Ramamurthy Award for the Best Ph.D. Thesis in Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras. As a researcher with a non-chemistry background, this recognition is particularly humbling. He remains deeply grateful to his supervisor, Prof. Kothandaraman Ramanujam, and the faculty members at IIT Madras for their unwavering support and mentorship throughout his doctoral journey.
Currently, Dr. Ganapathi Rao works as an Assistant Manager at Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies (ARACT), contributing to the development, testing, and qualification of next-generation battery technologies. His interests span Li/Na-ion batteries, formation processes, advanced testing, AI/ML-driven analytics, and energy system optimization.
Passionate about translating research into real-world impact, he aspires to build a technology-driven venture in the energy and sustainability domain, leveraging interdisciplinary tools to address future energy challenges.
